Sacred City

(Ira Caplan)
Sacred City, in a sunset's glow
My mother brought me up here almost 20 years ago
In an innocence that ended when I tried to chase the wind
To the source that is untraceable…And now the wind don't blow.

I watch it from the mountain with a traveling band of Turks,
The leader throws his hood back; he looks at me and smirks,
Says we finally brought you home, From now on, you're on your own,
So get in there and find out how this Sacred City works.

It's a kingdom of confusion, and the ministers are crying,
They govern with illusion, and their dynasty is dying,
While an ancient ideology is rising from the grave,
Wiping dust from a mythology of children borne to save
This Sacred City

The people of the city, seen a century of war
Over gold and land and oil, but it didn't help the poor.
Cause we've sealed our nations' fate In this fortress walled with hate,
Of another Sacred City on a sandy distant shore.

So I hit the Hall of Justice where the Prophecies are kept,
I snuck up to the President and whispered as he slept,
And through his dreams I spoke "You will only clear the smoke
With the wind soaked in the wisdom of the sacred tears we've wept

It's a kingdom of confusion...

Once had dolphins in our oceans and horses on our plains,
Now there's only legend and our civilized remains,
But history is a horse that must be free to run its course
And the wind rebukes the human hands that try to pull the reins.

So we're in our Sacred Tower, watching the flood below,
We've found out where we come from, who we are and what we know,
The water's closing in just as we're learning how to swim,
And we'll take the Sacred with us when the Cities over flow.

It's a kingdom of confusion, and the ministers are crying…,
This Sacred City...Sacred World
Sacred City...Sacred World
